As a university student working in a part-time job or any young person starting out on their path of adult life, it is hard to ever really afford an exotic holiday trip. But that is probably because we always go for the cliché places that we see on billboards or our friends’ Facebook pages. We rarely consider the possibility that it is actually plausible to have a great vacation without spending thousands. You just have to think logically and practically about your trip. Do you really need to stay in a 4-5 star hotel or is a 3 star or even a youth hostel enough for you? It’s not like you will be spending much time in your room anyway. You’re there to go sightseeing, partying and tanning, not sitting on your butt in the hotel! So, as a fellow student with a low budget, I decided to make a list of countries that are affordable to visit and explore yet they still have the ‘expensive’ and ‘exotic’ vibe to them.
1. Albania
Sometimes Europe might feel like an expensive place to travel around on a low budget but there are a few places that would fall into our category. Albania is one of those places that is not yet infested by many tourists and inflated prices but still offers beautiful architecture and amazing sunny beaches, all for an affordable price!
2. Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a gorgeous spot in which you can relax, breathe in the fresh air and slow down for a while. Costa Rica’s national parks are filled with beautiful waterfalls, natural springs and wildlife similar to that of a rain forest- and all of that reviving scenery is for next-to-nothing entry fees.
3. India
India is not your typical fancy and snobby vacation destination but it is very unique. Having visited India myself, I can vouch that, although you might be reverting to very simplistic ways of spending your time and travelling, its rich culture, hot weather, cheap food and history make it a rich-in-experience vacation destination that you will never forget! And if you’re already there, do not forget to visit Goa, which is one of the top destinations for students.
4. Romania
Romania is easy to get around and is cheap for tourists. It is famous for its Transylvanian castles and vampire stories. And if you’re more of the artsy type you can always go visit Bucharest and enjoy its amazing architecture and rich cultural as well as historical beauty. But if you’re not into site seeing, perhaps what will grab your interest are Romania’s affordable skiing resorts.
5. Poland
Poland is a fantastic destination for a summer vacation or a winter one as well. During summer, you can feel the exotic atmosphere surrounding the Baltic Sea. Poland’s beautiful and varied scenery makes it a great place for hikers and nature lovers. There are many festivals organized during the warm months that will definitely get your blood flowing! Each city in Poland is full of culture and delicious beer! During winter, Poland is full of skiing resorts and gorgeous frozen surroundings that give off a feeling of a magical winter wonderland.
6. Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a hotspot for budget travel. It is a place filled with wonder. Its serene Buddhist culture makes it a perfect place for people seeking peace and quiet. The thick jungle covering parts of the country and vast beaches make Sri Lanka an exotic jewel on the world map. Thanks to a staggered monsoon season, which means one half of the island experiences monsoon season at a different time from the other, it’s a year-round destination.
7. Thailand
Thailand has an interesting street-food culture that will give you the chance to explore the typical market life. You can buy a tasty Thai meal for just a pound and travel and basic accommodation come in rock-bottom prices. And thanks to the cheap food and living standards, you will be able to spend next to nothing on the temples and nightlife of lively cities like Bangkok and Chaing Mai and the beaches of Phuket and Koh Samui.
8. Cambodia
Cambodia is so cheap people sometimes feel guilty for paying so little. It is possible to get accommodation for a pound and amazing delicious food for even less than that. And of course, Cambodia is the house to the famous Angkor Wat, which is one of the world’s most astonishing historical sites. It is a very spiritual place filled with palms and striking architecture that will blow your mind.
9. Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a great place in Eastern Europe that many young people like to visit for its super cheap booze! But it is not only the alcohol that attracts its tourists. The beaches and Black Sea resorts offer a fantastic way to spend your summer tanning and fulfilling the traditional summer fantasies. Even if you prefer to spend your summer in a city, Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is a life booming city that offers yummy food, fun clubs and excellent hotels for very low prices.
10. Greece
The cost of living in Greece is much lower than it used to be, at least for the tourists and visitors, due to the country’s economic crisis. The Greek islands like Paxos are much underrated these days. They are much cheaper than many of the other European vacation destinations-you can bask on the beaches for free, grab a bed for a tenner and a meal for fiver. The country is also filled with ancient sites from Greek mythology that a perfect for those who want to discover the past in a fun and exuberant way.
